Seychelles. An Italian cruise ship on its way to Madagascar was recovered on March 1 after a fire broke out on board when the ferry was outside the Seychelles. The fire in one of the generators made the ship powerless and the engines stopped working. The ship, Costa Allegra, with more than 1,000 people on board, sent emergency signals while it was roaming around the Indian Ocean for three days waiting for rescue. In addition, Somali pirates are active in the area and have attacked ships there. On board the Costa Allegra, therefore, there were members of the Italian navy’s anti-piracy force.
Several vessels and tugs, including from the Seychelles, helped to bring the ferry in to the port on the main island of Seychelles, Mahé. The more than 600 passengers on board testified afterwards that the crew of more than 400 people was untrained for the emergency. Costa Allegra belongs to the same shipping company as the luxury ship Costa Concordia, which was due outside Italy in January 2012, which killed 32 lives.

D’Arros, one of the islands of Seychelles, was sold in August by one of the world’s most wealthy women to a company dedicated to environmental protection. The seller was the Frenchman Liliane Bettencourt, heiress to the beauty empire L’Oréal. She had bought D’Arros in 1998 for $ 18 million and sold the island for $ 60 million, according to the Seychelles government. HISTORY
Reached in the 16th century. by the Portuguese, the islands were colonized by the French starting in 1742. In 1814 they were ceded to Great Britain and in 1903 they became a colony of the Crown. Having become an independent Republic within the Commonwealth (26 June 1976), they were initially governed by a coalition government between the two major nationalist parties: the Democratic Party (PD), whose leader J. Mancham obtained the office of President of the Republic, and the most radical United People’s Party, led by F.-A. René, prime minister. In 1977 René dismissed Mancham and also assumed the post of head of state: the Constitution was suspended, a single party was formed, the Progressive People’s Front (FPP), and in 1979 a new Constitution, of socialist inspiration, was introduced. After having faced numerous coup attempts in the first half of the 1980s, René had to make more and more concessions to the opposition and at the end of 1991 he reintroduced multi-partyism, but his authority remained uncontested even in the new institutional set-up. On the economic level, a cautious liberalization policy was adopted, aimed above all at attracting foreign capital in the tourism, agricultural and fishing sectors which were in the meantime partially privatized. Reconfirmed several times, René stepped down from office in 2004 and was replaced by his deputy J. Michel, reconfirmed head of state in the 2011 and 2015 elections. In the 2007 and 2011 parliamentary elections, the FPP obtained an absolute majority, while those held in 2016 saw the victory of the opposition coalition Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) for the first time since 1977, which obtained 15 seats in the National Assembly against the 10 awarded by the FPP. In October 2020, the country’s president D. Faure, who replaced the resigning Michel in 2016, was replaced by W. Ramkalawan, a member of the opposition.
