History
Illinois joined the American Union as a state in 1818. Chicago as a world city in the making was founded in the 1830s on the banks of the Chicago River with one of the few natural harbors in southern Lake Michigan. The railroads and the self-cleaning plow transformed the fertile prairies of central Illinois into the most productive and valuable agricultural lands in the world. This attracted immigrant farmers of German and Swedish descent. During the American Civil War, Illinois belonged to the Union. Three US presidents were elected while still living in Illinois: Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and Barack Obama. The only president who was actually born there was Ronald Reagan.
Geography
Illinois borders Lake Michigan and Wisconsin to the north, Iowa and Missouri to the west, and Indiana and Kentucky to the east. The entire western border is dominated by the Mississippi River, part of the southeastern border by the Ohio. The highest point is the top of Charles Mound (376m). The Illinois River runs through the state and flows into the Mississippi.
Chicago
Everything revolves around the city of Chicago in the state of Illinois, but the capital is Springfield. Chicago’s nearly 3 million residents love architecture, music and art. Chicago is the third largest city in America after New York and Los Angeles and because of its central location it is very important for the American economy. When you visit Chicago you are often amazed by the architecture, the huge buildings that have been built here. A major fire in 1871 sparked a revolution in architecture. Thus, the first skyscraper in Chicago was built. This has since been surpassed by the Willis Tower , where you can look out over the city on the 103rd floor. A large art collection can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago.
Abraham Lincoln and Route 66
Illinois is also known as the Lincoln country. The famous president Abraham Lincoln started his political career in 1832 in the capital Springfield. As the 16th president, Lincoln brings about a lot with his plans to abolish slavery, resulting in the American Civil War. He is murdered in 1865. In Springfield, for example, you can visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidental Library Museum. Springfield is also on the famous route 66, of course it starts in Chicago.
