Faroe Islands. The year was marked by the fishing war in which the Faroe Islands and Iceland fought the EU and Norway for the mackerel quotas. Since 2010, five rounds of negotiations had been carried out without results, and in February the EU Fisheries Commissioner directed strong criticism of the Faroe Islands and Iceland, which increased their mackerel catches far more than the current agreement as the mackerel after climate change went into the Faroese and Icelandic waters.
After the negotiations collapsed, the EU threatened sanctions against the two islands, which Faroese politicians termed revolver diplomacy. The Faroe Islands criticized the Danish government for not doing enough in the EU to resolve the mackerel war. Sanctions against Faroese fish exports to the EU could have devastating consequences for the islands’ economy, the Faroe Islands said.

The head of government, teammate Kaj Leo Johannesen, arose when in his annual address to the Lagting in July, he stated that within a couple of decades he wants to see the Faroe Islands independently within the national community and with his own membership in the UN. He wants to see the national community develop into a confederation of the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Denmark. The teamman’s party The Union Party has traditionally protected the ties to Denmark and made opposition to the independence forces in the Faroe Islands.
Johannesen also suggested that the Faroe Islands should seek their own membership in the World Trade Organization, even though the island is not entitled to it. The Faroe Islands experience it as a problem for Denmark as a member of the WHO to defend both its own fishing interests and the Faroe Islands. The lawmaker described the Faroe Islands as the world’s most international country, economically wholly dependent on the outside world, by exporting 96% of the fishing catch and importing 99% of all goods.
