Stems

Manufactured in different lengths and for different diameter of handlebars, stems are one of the few ways to affect the geometry of the bike and the position subsequently. The wheel stem attaches to the steerer tube of the Steering head and attacks the handlebar. Optionally, it consists of carbon or aluminium. In the former, the driver during installation to the tightening torque must respect. In General, using special fitting grease is recommended for carbon components.

Bicycle handlebars and stability

stems are each designed for a specific bike class, reflected also in their strength values as in the weight. Furthermore, different standards have emerged for different types of bicycle. Quite new, for example, the thicker is allows 35 mm standard for mountain bikes, the thicker and thus more stable driver in the Enduro sector. Also, the driver must not confuse with the stable components for Cyclocrossräder road bike components. Latter are prepared for off-road driving, while the former for road use enough.

Influence on the Steering

the length of the stem has an influence on the lever forces acting on the steering. If the wheel stem is changed, the Kräfterelationen between the hub and bar also change. Basically, its length in a healthy relative to the steering angle of the control head should be, so that the performance does not suffer from the change. For trekking bikes stems with a built-in adjustment exist, these are variable in the angle. MTBs applies: the shorter, more direct steering behavior. Disadvantage: There is less pressure on the front wheel. Worth trying out, many high-quality parts are available in the assortment of RaceFace!
